The Bounty Trail
L.D. Tetlow

Unusually for a western this book features a black man in the lead roll of Caleb Black, he's a Reverend but, as he's always pointing out, he has to eat so he's a bounty hunter too.

Temporary co-opted minister at Broken Ridge amidst a certain amount of animosity Black learns in advance of a bank robbery in a nearby town. He can't stop the robbery but can, and does, catch the outlaws and claim the reward on them. Only thing is the money has disappeared. Black sets out to search for it but he's not the only person hunting for this small fortune.

L. D. Tetlow provides a readable book with a straight forward plot. The only new idea is that his lead character is black. Caleb Black's speach made me smile at first, very precise and well spoken. It takes quite a while for any action to make it's way into the story and when it does it's over in a blink of an eye. Tetlow offers no surprises or twists and the story ends pretty much as you'd think. As I've said though The Bounty Trail is a readable book even if it is low on action.

After reading the posts here about Mr. Hale saying he wants plenty of action I must say I was very surprised by the lack of it in this tale. Looking at the list in the front of the book L. D. Tetlow has had many books published.

Don't think I'll be rushing out to find more by this author.

FOOTNOTE: I also feel the back blurb gave away far too much of the storyline, probably the first two thirds of the book which could be why I felt the story offered nothing in the way of surprises.
