Flaming Irons
Clem Westmore

Matt Borden is a man with a hidden past. Matt Pearce had disappeared and was not about to be resurrected if he and his new wife were to carry on running their small ranch. Jack Tabor has a scheme to fleece the merchants of Dry Fork and the small ranchers in the area and it's not long before one of his gunmen recognizes Borden for who he really is. Tabor threatens to reveal the truth about Borden unless he rides for him and Borden has no choice but to agree. Eventually the real Matt has to emerge from the shadows as Tabor's actions go too far.

This book was a very quick and easy read. A tale that threw up a few questions at the beginning around a murder. The plot built well to what I hoped would be an exciting showdown. The showdown came but by then the book had seemed to level out and instead of finishing with an explosion just fizzled out.

The character of Borden seemed at contrasts with itself at times. Borden was built up as a tough man but when faced with possible death almost became a gibbering wreak which didn't portray the hard western hero I'd been expecting from the beginning.

Not bad but I'll probably look for other BHW authors to read before trying another from Clem Westmore.
