| Bounty hunter Asa Peake trails a man who owes him
into Perdition Gap only to find the man dead, killed by a deputy. Peake then takes what's his against the marshal's wishes and soon Peake finds himself being hunted by the lawman. Peake, at the same time, is trailing more outlaws. Soon lawman and bounty
hunter will have to team up to tackle the gunhawks. This is a very straight forward western with little depth to the plot. The writing style took a bit of getting used to, clipped sentences and speech spelt as spoken, this last meaning I occasionally
had to re-read to make sure I'd got the gist of what was being said. One gunfight followed another between bounty hunter or lawmen and different outlaws, giving the story a feeling of different episodes, the only links being Peake or lawman
Curlew. At times it felt like the author had included another gunfight just to fill the number of pages he needed for the book, because of this I found my mind wandering. Let's hope this isn't representative of Hansons' work as I have a few
more of his books in my collection. |
