Too Many Notches
Chad Hammer

When ramrod Chev Best is shot dead on the Hightower Ranch range boss Lawson Hannibal knew he must fight fire with fire. He hires gunfighters Chett Allison and the lethal Traven and then the range war really erupts and many will pay the highest price of all.

This book had a feeling of being written long ago, right down to chapter titles, even though the copyright states 2005.

At the start events are seen through the eyes of Angelina Hannibal, Lawson's daughter, share her mistrust and dislike for gunfighters in general. Later the focus of the book is told from Allison or Traven's view as the gunfighters try to justify their trade. And that's about it. There's plenty of action which is mainly over in a few sentences and a predictable ending.

At times I found my mind wandering but I soon became hooked not by the story but by counting how many different terms were used to describe gunfighters and here they are: Gunslinger, Guntipper, Gunmaster, Gunman, Gunhand, Gunslick, Gun Hero, Gunpacker, Top Gun, Gunhawk, Hired Gun, Gun Stud, Gunny, Gunners, Pistol-Fighter, Fast Gun, Wonder Gun and Headliner. Traven was described as Allison's Gun Partner, Gun Dog, Gun Pard and Gun Segundo. Gun Hell, Gunblast, Gunfire and Gun Crew all turned up too. Chad Hammer also had all the main gunfighters wearing two guns.

This book has just got to win an award for the most words used in one story linked to the word gun!
